Coffee weight = water weight ÷ ratio. A 1:16 ratio with 500 g of water needs 500 ÷ 16 = 31.25 g of coffee. Since water weighs 1 g per ml, 500 g is 500 ml. Common brew ratios run from 1:15 (stronger) to 1:18 (lighter); a level tablespoon of ground coffee is roughly 5 grams. Weighing on a scale is far more accurate than scooping.

Questions

What is a good coffee-to-water ratio?
A 1:16 ratio is the common 'golden ratio' — for every 1 gram of coffee, use 16 grams of water. Use 1:15 for a stronger cup or 1:18 for a lighter one.
How much coffee for 500 ml of water?
At a 1:16 ratio, 500 g (500 ml) of water needs 500 ÷ 16 ≈ 31 grams of coffee, roughly 6 level tablespoons.
