Time Duration Calculator
Find the duration between a start and end time, in hours and minutes.
Enter a start and end time to measure the duration.
When the end time is the same as or earlier than the start, the span is assumed to cross midnight. The decimal-hours figure is the form most timesheets and payroll systems expect. Everything is worked out in your browser.
How to calculate a duration
Enter a start time and an end time. The elapsed hours and minutes appear instantly, along with the total minutes and the decimal-hours equivalent. If the end time is before the start, the span is treated as running overnight.
When to measure a duration
Working out shift length and hours worked, timing a journey or activity, or measuring how long something ran between two clock times. The decimal-hours output suits pay and billing.
Questions
Does it handle times that run past midnight?
Yes. If the end time is earlier in the clock than the start time — such as 22:00 to 06:00 — the tool assumes the span crosses midnight and counts the duration as eight hours rather than a negative figure.
How is the result shown?
The duration is given as hours and minutes, and also as a total number of minutes and as decimal hours, so you can drop whichever form you need straight into a timesheet or pay calculation.
Can I use it for timesheets?
Yes. Enter your clock-in and clock-out times to get the worked hours and minutes. The decimal-hours figure is the one most payroll systems expect for an hourly rate.
