Megapixels = width × height ÷ 1,000,000. A 6000 × 4000 px image is 24,000,000 pixels = 24 MP. One megapixel is exactly one million pixels, so the figure is just the total pixel count divided by a million — handy for comparing sensors or working out how large a file can print.

Questions

How do I calculate megapixels?
Multiply the width by the height in pixels and divide by one million. A 6000 × 4000 px image is 6000 × 4000 = 24,000,000 pixels, which is 24 megapixels.
Do more megapixels mean a better photo?
Not on their own. Megapixels set how large you can print or crop, but lens quality, sensor size, dynamic range and light have at least as much effect on image quality.
