How to convert an image to grayscale

Drop an image onto the box above (or click to choose a file). It's converted to black and white instantly and a Download PNG button appears. There's no upload and no sign-up — the image stays on your device.

Greyscale vs. desaturate

This tool produces a true luminance greyscale, which is what you want for a natural black-and-white photo. If you only need a faded look you could compress or recolour afterwards, but for classic monochrome this is the right conversion.

Questions

Is this grayscale converter free?
Yes — completely free, with no account, no watermark, and no file-size limit. The conversion runs in your browser with the Canvas API.
Do my images get uploaded?
No. Everything happens locally on your device, so your image never leaves your browser — it's instant and private.
How is the black-and-white calculated?
We use Rec. 601 luminance weighting (0.299 red + 0.587 green + 0.114 blue), which matches how the eye perceives brightness — greens look lighter, blues darker — rather than a flat average. The result looks natural, not washed out.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes. The alpha channel is left untouched and the file is exported as a lossless PNG, so any transparent areas stay transparent.
