Purity, wisdom and quiet luck.

Each calendar month has a birthstone — a tradition with roots in antiquity that the modern jewellery trade standardised in the 20th century. We show the primary modern stone for the month you pick, along with the common alternates and the qualities the stone is traditionally said to carry. June, for instance, is the pearl (with alexandrite and moonstone as alternates). Lists vary a little between countries and jewellers; this follows the widely used modern list. The lookup runs entirely in your browser.

How to find a birthstone

Pick a birth month from the list. We show the modern primary stone for that month, any common alternate stones, and a short note on what the gem is traditionally said to represent.

Questions

What is June's birthstone?
June's modern birthstone is the pearl, with alexandrite and moonstone as common alternates. The pearl is traditionally linked to purity and wisdom.
Why do some months have more than one birthstone?
Birthstone lists were standardised by the jewellery trade in the 20th century but still vary a little between countries and traditions. Several months carry an older 'traditional' stone alongside the 'modern' one, so you'll often see alternates listed.
Where do birthstones come from?
The idea of a gem for each month has roots in antiquity and in older zodiac-stone traditions. The list most people use today is the modern one set out by jewellers, which we follow here.
