mean = sum ÷ count = 40 ÷ 8 = 5

The average (arithmetic mean) is the sum of all values divided by how many there are. The median — the middle value when sorted — is shown alongside because it is less affected by outliers. Everything is computed in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

How to find an average

Type or paste your numbers into the box, separated by commas, spaces or new lines. The average (mean) appears instantly, along with the count, sum, median and range so you can see how it was worked out.

Averaging grades or scores

Paste a column of test scores, prices or measurements straight from a spreadsheet. The tool ignores blank cells and stray labels, sums the valid numbers and divides by the count to give the average in real time.

Questions

How do I calculate an average?
Add up all the numbers, then divide by how many there are. For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 the sum is 40 and the count is 8, so the average is 40 ÷ 8 = 5.
What is the difference between the mean and the median?
The mean is the sum divided by the count, while the median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. The median is shown here too because it is less affected by a few very large or very small outliers.
How do I enter the numbers?
Separate them with commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines — for example 88, 92, 79, 95, 84. Non-numeric text is ignored and the average updates as you type.
